We are delighted to announce that the 9th edition of The Privacy, Data Protection and Cybersecurity Law Review was recently published and is now live on our website. Dominique Lecocq and Logaina Omer's publication on the Metaverse and the Law touches on the legal status of the metaverse internationally, its applicable laws, jurisdictions and frameworks.
In conclusion, the metaverse has within its potential the possibility of being a game changer, but maybe not the 'next big thing' in law. Certain issues it generates are significantly new, others are something that the legal theory has already addressed, and some would only require some deeper analyses.
It is impossible to foresee the impact on these issues without seeing what would happen in practice. There is no going back, thus only possibility is to steer into the future and try to profit from it, or to be doomed in a worse manner than the unlucky famous Gatsby: "we cannot be borne back ceaselessly, because we no longer have a past to go to."
